Everybody Tells You What's Wrong. Nobody Tells You What's Working.

You can get feedback on your writing in about ten seconds. Post it online or in a writing group and people will tell you what to fix. That part's easy.

What you almost never hear is which parts are good, which of your instincts are right, or which lines you should build around.

The problem isn't a lack of feedback

You've gotten feedback. Plenty of it. Red ink, tracked changes, vague margin notes that say "awkward" or "tighten this" without telling you what any of it means.

Over time you stop trusting your own ear and start second guessing everything you write. You rewrite a draft over and over again, not because it was bad, but because you couldn't tell anymore which parts were the problem and which parts were good.

This isn't because the people giving you feedback are wrong. Rather it's about the nature of feedback. Problems are easy to point at but are hard to solve. "This sentence is unclear" takes five seconds to say. But how to make it clear can talk pages of explanation. So you end up with a lopsided map of your own writing. You know exactly what's wrong with your work but not always an idea of what is working that people passed because it was good.

What you need

You need someone to read your work closely and tell you, specifically, what's already working and why. Not just to be nice to you. Because you can't make edit your work or improve as a writer if you don't know what to protect.

That's where I come in.

How it works

Send me up to 1000 words of something you're working on. It can be anything from a draft of a short blog post to a section of an article you are working on. Whatever you're stuck on.

I'll read it carefully, then record a private video for you of around 15 minutes covering:

  • What your piece is actually communicating

  • Your specific strengths, with examples from your own writing

  • What to Keep during your next round of editing

  • The potential I see in the piece, the idea, or the voice

  • One concrete next step to build on your strengths

Who this is for

This is for you if you have a piece of writing you believe in but keep second-guessing, and you want someone with a trained eye to tell you what's actually there. If you want your commas fixed, hire a copy editor. If you want someone to tell you the piece is ready to publish, I can't promise that. If you're looking for a full developmental edit, this isn't that (though it might be a good starting point for one).
