You Are More Qualified Than You Think
You may want to write publicly—on a blog, a newsletter, Substack, Medium, or for a publication—but get stuck before you begin. Not because you have no ideas, Because you keep asking yourself whether you are qualified to write them.
Maybe you have thought:
“I do not have the credentials to write about this.”
“I have experience, but I am not an expert.”
“I know something about this, but someone else probably knows much more.”
“Who am I to say anything?”
Those are sensible concerns. Public writing should not involve making claims you cannot support, speaking beyond your knowledge, or borrowing authority you have not earned.
But “qualified” is broader than formal training.
You may not be qualified to write everything about a subject. Almost nobody is. But you may be qualified to write something specific: what you have done, tried, or even failed at. The difficulty is that it is hard to see your own perspective from the inside. The things you know may feel ordinary to you because you live with them every day. You may assume that someone else has already said it better. Or you may worry that writing about it would make you sound arrogant, uninformed, too personal, or not academic enough.
This video is designed to help you see it.
What this video does
The Expertise Positioning Video is a private, personal video response to your experience, knowledge, interests, frustrations, and public-writing goals.
You fill out a short form. You tell me about what you do, what you know, what you have lived through, what people ask you about, what you care about, and what you think people get wrong.
Then I create a private video—around 15 minutes—providing an assessment of what you are genuinely qualified to write about, where that qualification comes from, and how you might begin.
What I’ll cover
Your video will include:
Your real areas of qualification
Where that authority comes from
The right scope for your claims
What makes your perspective worth hearing
Two or three possible writing directions
A few concrete ideas for pieces you could write
One sensible first step
Who this is for
This may be useful if:
You want to write publicly but keep waiting until you feel “qualified enough.”
You have a degree, career, practice, or life experience but cannot see how it translates into writing.
You have been through something difficult or learned something important, but do not know whether it is yours to write about.
You want to speak honestly about a subject without claiming more authority than you have.
You are tired of being told to “build a personal brand” or “find your niche.”
You have more ideas than direction.
You know what frustrates you about your field, work, community, or everyday life, but do not know how to turn that insight into public writing.
You want to write for people beyond your professional or academic field.
